What is the Positive Intelligence Quotient?

pq-title

In the field of human development, we have come across many measures of human intelligence, such as Emotional intelligence (EQ), Intelligence Quotient (IQ), and many others.

The Positive Intelligence Quotient (PQ) is used as a measure of mental fitness. It is the percentage of time the mind is being positive, allowing it to flourish — a big factor for anyone reaching their full potential.

Positive intelligence is a science-based programme developed by Shirzad Chamine (2012), best known for his development of the Theory of Positive Intelligence. He argues that positive intelligence is based on research from performance science, neuroscience, cognitive psychology and performance science.

His research is summarized in the New York Times best-selling book, Positive Intelligence translated into 20 languages . It includes results from:

  • Hundreds of CEOs and their executive teams
  • Stanford students
  • World–class athletes
  • 500,000 participants from 50 countries
  • Many YPO families and Forums

He describes the research as independently validating positive intelligence.

Through this extensive research, Shizard Chamine has developed a focussed programme to help you harness the power of Positive Intelligence through the MENTAL FITNESS PROGRAMME.

How do you build up your PQ?

Most attempts at positive change fail because we stop at insight and don’t build habits. Sustained change towards a more positive mind requires laying down neural pathways to form new habits through consistent daily practice. And that’s what our PQ® Program empowers you to do.

Your mind can be your best friend, but it is also your worst enemy, involved in self-sabotage. Your self-sabotage is caused by what we call “Saboteurs” in your mind. Sometimes known as the critical voices and the mental fitness coaching programme is the best tool to control your mind. Are you in control of your mind? Going through this programme will reveal that you are NOT.

The Mental Fitness Coaching Programme

Mental Fitness is our capacity to respond to life’s challenges with positive rather than negative mindset.

It is about how we grow the 3 Core Mental Muscles to thrive in challenging times.

Think of physical fitness in terms of enduring physical activity, with little effort or negative impact involved. If you are not physically fit, you will experience physical stress with minimal physical activity.

The analogy can also be applied for mental fitness. If you are not mentally fit, you may experience mental stress. This can come in the form of depression, anxiety, frustration, and anger (Chamine, 2012). It will inevitably impact many areas of your life – education, work, family, relationships, social interactions, and recreation and well-being.

The positive intelligence quotient (PQ) is used as a measure of Mental Fitness. It is the percentage of time the mind is being positive, allowing it to flourish — a big factor in allowing you to reach your full potential.

The Results of Factor Analysis Research suggests that only 3 Core Mental Muscles are at the root of mental fitness.

  1. Saboteur Interceptor
  2. Sage
  3. Self-Command

PQ measures the strength of an individual’s positive mental muscles (sometimes called their “sage”) versus their negative ( the “saboteur”).

The self-command muscle is the ability an individual has to boost their sage and dampen down their saboteur (Chamine, 2012). You will learn more about how to boost this muscle with exercises later on in this article.

About the Core Mental Muscles.

We learn from Shirzad’s research that both saboteurs and sages reside in different parts of the brain. The good news is that saboteurs are not static or fixed for life. They can be challenged and weakened. As they weaken the sage is boosted through mental fitness exercises provided in this programme. We are not always affected by all 10 saboteurs at the same time and in the same way. Different people show up differently and are affected by different saboteurs. It also matters your emotional resilience and life’s circumstance.

There are 10 internal saboteurs (internal voices, critical voices).
The judge is the universal master for all people and a common saboteur that afflicts all individuals.

The Saboteur

The “survive” region on the brain

  • Motivates you through negative emotions .
  • It is fear-based manifesting as stress, anger, guilt, shame, insecurity, and mind chatter etc.
  • It might generate success but NOT happiness.
  • They reside in the brainstem, limbic system , and parts of the left brain.
  • These emotions are only helpful for a second as an alert signal to dangers and issues.
  • However staying in these emotions hurts your ability to see clearly and choose the most impactful response.

The Sage

The “thrive” region of the brain.

  • Motivates you through positive emotions – LOVE based. It manifests as empathy, curiosity, creativity, passion , purpose, big picture , peace and calm, clear-headed focus.
  • Generates your highest success and sustained happiness. Sage lives in a
  • Lives in region of brain – the middle prefrontal cortex, “empathy circuity, and parts of the right brain. Activating this region results in results of endorphins that counter the negative impacts of stress induced cortisol.
  • Operates from the Sage Perspective, that every outcome or circumstance can be turned into a gift and opportunity.

The sage perspective says that every outcome or circumstance
can be turned into a gift and opportunity.

The Story Of My Life!

A long time ago, a year after getting married with a toddler and a new-born baby, my life took a turn for the worst. Everything that could go wrong went wrong, and our value systems were severely tested.

From loss of income – resulting on accumulating debts. I didn’t earn much, and we were on the verge of losing the house which was in my name. As time went by, I started subsiding my income by selling clothes, with the support from others I maintained the status quo. In this period our house was destroyed by fire, and we found ourselves living with neighbours while the house was being reconstrued. The most important division I took was upgrading my studies towards a degree, and once I qualified, I changed jobs which improved my life, and then filed for divorce. This is happening over a 7 year -period of wilderness!

Back to the sage perspective, that says every circumstance can be into a gift or opportunity.

  • Was this bad or good? According to PQ whichever perspective you believe becomes true.

From the Saboteur perspective, particularly the judge; this was very bad for me, others and for my family and our belief system.

From a Sage perspective, what was the gift? The sage carries three gifts. These are knowledge , power, and inspiration. At the time it didn’t feel as much. What knowledge would I need to gain so that the payoff in the future could be much larger than what this is costing me now?

Which mental muscle power must grow for me to handle this?

Commitment to an inspiring action that you wouldn’t have if this “bad” thing hadn’t happened.

Lessons From My Story

Knowledge:

I learned a lot about myself and others . My relationship with God moved from religion to relation. As a child of a Church leader everything that was happening could have easily condemned me for life according to my religion instead discovered God for myself.

Power:

For me it was the sage power of empathy for myself and others. Respect for humanity, clear-headedness and decision making.

Inspiring action:

I discovered my financial management skills, resilient nature, and compassion for people. Compassion for people is what led me to discovering my gift of encouragement – and becoming a coach. I completed my first degree during this period, double promotion, bought a car and a house by myself. I learnt to trust people and formed many quality relationships, and my faith is restored for eternity.

According to PQ whichever perspective you believe becomes true.

The Role Of A Self-Command Muscle

During the Mental Fitness Bootcamp programme, we experience how to regulate our mental muscles using the self-command muscle. The self-command is the process of minimising the saboteurs and activating the sage. Similarly, the practise of presencing – (the act of bringing yourself in the present moment). It combines many techniques, including contemplation exercises, breathing techniques, and using your senses.

Through the breakthrough process called PQ Reps, you get to boost your Self-Command muscle. The process can take 10 seconds. With each PQ REP, you develop your own mind, silencing the negative, and activate the positive region of your brain. PQ® Reps

We cannot access the wisdom of sage in saboteur mode. We need to bring ourselves to the body. Using senses, feelings, sight, smell, etc. The sage is accessed through the body.

Here is the simplicity of this Positive Operating System:

  1. If you’re feeling negative emotions STOP.
    You’re in Saboteur mode.
  2. Do some PQ Reps to quiet Saboteurs and activate Sage.
  3. Assume the Sage Perspective that every problem can be converted into a gift & opportunity.
  4. Generate the gift by using the Sage powers like empathy, curiosity, creativity, and calm, clear-headed action.

Is it possible to just shift from Saboteur to Sage response, even in tough challenges?

The answer is yes, but the speed and depth of the shift depends on mental muscle strength. Lasting positive change requires 20% insight and 80% mental muscle.
